Introduction to CranioSacral Therapy and Overview of CranioSacral Therapy

The Upledger Institute, Inc.®,has created two CranioSacral Therapy (CST) study programs that teach participants the benefits of CST along with basic techniques they can use in practice and for their own health. The 12-hour Introduction to CranioSacral Therapy and the six-hour Overview of CranioSacral Therapy are abbreviated programs of the Institute's four-day CranioSacral Therapy I workshop -- a course that has been studied by more than 120,000 healthcare practitioners worldwide.

CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle, hands-on technique used to evaluate and enhance the function of the craniosacral system -- the physiological body system comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord.

Developed by John E. Upledger, DO, OMM, CranioSacral Therapy enhances the body's natural healing processes to improve the operation of the central nervous system, dissipate the negative effects of stress, enhance health, and strengthen resistance to disease.

CST can be easily integrated into a wide range of treatment plans with potentially profound effects. Among the many medical conditions for which CranioSacral Therapy has shown to be effective are chronic headaches, neck and back pain,TMJ dysfunction, chronic fatigue, eye problems,motor-coordination difficulties, hyperactivity, attention deficit disorder, and central nervous system disorders.

Program Highlights

Material in both the Introduction and Overview workshops is presented through lecture, demonstration and hands-on practice. Coursework includes:

  • The foundation of the craniosacral system and techniques to effect change.
  • The anatomy and physiology of the craniosacral system and its relationship to illness, pain and dysfunction.
  • Developing and refining light-touch palpation skills.
  • Palpating the "listening stations" -- key body locations where the craniosacral motion can best be evaluated.
  • Sacral Decompression, Dural Tube Rock/Glide, V-Spread, CV-4 and Still-Point Induction techniques (12 hour Introduction workshop only).
  • Fascial Release Techniques for the pelvic, respiratory, thoracic inlet and hyoid diaphragms
Workshops
In addition, all participants receive:
  • A study guide, certificate of attendance and class roster.
  • A tuition discount on a 4-day CranioSacral Therapy I workshop.
  • Eligibility for continuing education units.
  • Continental Breakfast included.

ShareCare Workshop

Program Highlights

ShareCare will give you a solid understanding of exactly what CranioSacral Therapy is, how it was developed and why it's so effective. ShareCare follows The Upledger Institute's "learning by discovery" format. After seeing a presentation and demonstration of each technique, you'll have the opportunity to try it out through supervised practice. This way you can actually experience the physical changes that occur as you practice techniques such as these...

  • Light-Touch Palpation (therapeutic touching)
  • Still-Point Induction
  • CV-4 Self-Help Technique
  • Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Decompression
You'll Also Learn How to...
  • Recognize the rhythm of the craniosacral system.
  • Perform basic therapeutic techniques on yourself and your loved ones. In many cases, you can use these techniques to complement professional therapy.
  • Gain a greater understanding of your role in your own health and well-being.
  • Ground and Center your Energy

CranioSacral Therapy Study Group

  • Study groups are an excellent opportunity to hone skills and to share experiences and ideas that are applicable to CranioSacral Therapy. We are encouraging development in the abilities of:
    • listening and evaluation skills
    • deepening palpation proficiency
    • integrating CST into your current practice

"Taking the ShareCare class with Janet Ferguson was exciting, and easy to grasp. She pours her heart and soul into her class instruction. It gave me an excellent basis to practice CranioSacral Therapy on friends and family. I am so glad I took the ShareCare class before I took the CST Level 1 class as it prepared me for a solid understanding of palpating CS rhythm as well as the whole concept of CranioSacral Therapy. I was able to enter into CST 1 with much confidence." - S.G.

Newborns and Infants

Research strongly suggests that the birth process is responsible for many brain dysfunctions and central nervous systems problems.

CranioSacral Therapy can potentially reduce a wide variety of difficulties, many of which might not become apparent until your child is in school.

Even problems with head shape and skull-bone override can be corrected.

"I am thoroughly convinced that one of the best things we can do for our children is to have them begin life with smoothly functioning craniosacral systems, removing physical restrictions." - by John E. Upledger, DO, OMM

CranioSacral Therapy

The craniosacral system consists of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord.
It extends from the bones of the skull, face and mouth, which make up the cranium, down to the sacrum.
The CranioSacral Therapy practitioner uses a light touch no heavier than the weight of a nickel, to assist the natural soft tissue to help the body self-correct.

Since the role of this system influences the development and performance of the brain and spinal cord, CST can prevent
and restore sensory, motor and/or neurological disabilities.
Those suffering chronic symptoms from head, neck or back injuries due to trauma, also benefit from CST.
Stress related dysfunctions such as fatigue, headaches, anxiety, etc. are reversed.
Providing the conditions for the nervous system to rest and rejuvenate.

CranioSacral Therapy for Pediatrics is gentle and safe for children of all ages including newborns.

SomatoEmotional Release

SomatoEmotional Release is a therapeutic process, the objective of which is to rid your mind and body of the residual effects of past injuries and negative experiences. Physical trauma which is not dissipated or healed by the body, is "walled off" into a localized area causing a disorganized or chaotic molecular "energy cyst". This becomes an area of dysfunction, which inhibits normal body tissue and fluid motion. A healthy body can adapt to these energy cysts, however, over time, symptoms and dysfunctions begin to appear.

When negative emotions are experienced at the time of the trauma, ie: fear, anger, then these forces are physically retained as well. SER is the acknowledgement and re-experiencing of this emotion and trauma, in order for it to be transformed and released, facilitating the body/mind to health and healing.

We treat the body as a whole - physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually!
